Sportswomen of Colorado Scholarship opportunities for this program are being donated by colleges, universities, school programs and independent sports camp entities in Colorado. Cash donations are also being solicited from individuals, businesses, and corporations to assist with room and board expenses, transportation, sports attire and equipment costs as needed.
Nomination forms are being distributed via elementary and middle schools as well as local youth centers and non-profit organizations in the state. To be eligible to receive a scholarship, applicants must fill out and submit a one-page nomination form. Applicants must write a brief paragraph about why their nomination is worthy of selection. A parent or guardian and either the school principal, teacher, or coach will be required to sign the nomination form as well. The Sportswomen of Colorado Girls Camp Scholarship Program Committee will select up to 100 scholarship recipients from the pool of applicants.
All recipients will be notified of their sports camp awards and be invited to confirm their planned attendance at an assigned summer sports camp.
Sportswomen of Colorado is committed to promoting educational opportunities for girls in sports. This program was launched in 2001 as a result of seed money donated by Pepsi Bottling Group of Denver. It expands on the mission of the organization by recognizing and honoring summer camp scholarship award winners. Funding is provided by donations from individuals, business sponsors, corporate sponsors and the Helen M. McLoraine Endowment Fund. As resources increase annually, this program will be expanded to increase awards for girls living in the state of Colorado.
Girls Camp Scholarship Program
Frequently Asked Questions
Summer 2009
1. What are the dates for the camp?
Summer sports camps run throughout the months of June, July and August. We don't have specific dates yet since each camp is donated by coaches from colleges and universities within Colorado. We will work with award winners and their parents to place the girl in camp that fits her schedule and is located near where she lives.
2. How much do the camps cost?
The camps themselves are absolutely free.
3. Where are the camps located in Colorado?
The camps are located all over Colorado and mostly on college and university campuses. We will place the award winners in camps that are located close to where they live.
4. Is the scholarship program only for kids who are economically disadvantaged?
No. The camp scholarship opportunity is available to every girl in Colorado. Special outreach efforts and financial support will be extended to girls who are economically disadvantaged. We want to make sure that girls who are economically disadvantaged get the opportunity to apply for a scholarship.
5. What are the specific types of camps?
Each year we expand our camp availability. Camps that we have offered in the past are the following: basketball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, skating, softball, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, hockey and volleyball
6. Can the award winner attend any camp of their choice?
Our goal is to match the winner with a sports camp that matches one of their three choices on their application. The award winner is not guaranteed a specific camp of their choice, however we will work with them to select a type of camp they are interested in (for example a basketball camp offered in their area).
7. Is it your organization that specifically runs the camps?
We do not run any of the camps. We get the camps donated from coaches at colleges, universities and sports programs. Then we place the award winners in the camp.
8. What if an award winner can not go to camp during a specific week?
We will work with the award winner and their parents to select a week that fits into the family schedule.
9. Does your organization provide transportation to and from the camp?
No. We do not provide transportation. In order for the award winner to accept the scholarship, they must have transportation to and from the camp. Some of the camps are overnight camps so less transportation is needed. We will, however, work with the award winner, their parents and their application sponsor to help find a solution if transportation is a problem.
10. What is the timeline for the Girls Camp Scholarship Process?
- Collect applications until the deadline of April 15, 2009
- Select winners between April 15th and May 1, 2009
- Notify the award winners by May 8, 2009
- Camps run from June through August 2009
